Exports are the whey ahead for Lye Cross Farm. Three generations of the Alvis family have been making Cheddar cheese in the lush farmland of north Somerset since the 1950s. Today, consumers from the USA to France, from Spain to Singapore, tuck into their products.
Just six miles from the town of Cheddar, and only using milk from farms within a 20-mile radius, the Lye Cross brand enjoys the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) accorded to Cheddar cheese. That provided a good base for Johnny and Pete Alvis to increase sales and broaden production capacity by extending the range to “conventional” as well as its organic cheeses. And that has led to powerful export growth.
In this film, the brothers describe how they have used trade shows and consumer research as the basis for their global expansion.
